Ultrasonic Pedestrian Detection Systems
These systems are designed to detect a pedestrian or cyclist within the detections zone of 4 (or more) Transceivers that are located on the vehicle. These are normally mounted along the side of the vehicle, but can equally be fitted to the front or rear of the vehicle
This system will normally be activated below a pre-determined speed (typically 20 MPH for a side detection system) and work by transmitting an ultrasonic wave which if reflected back by an object will trigger a warning alarm.
They are extremely reliable at detecting pedestrians and cyclists within their detection cone but may also detect other objects within the cone.
A further consideration in respect to this system is that each transceiver detects over a cone originating from the transceiver head which means there can be gaps between detection zones if they are installed too far apart. This system is also quite time consuming to install as four sets of transceivers and wiring have to be installed.
But other benefits of this system are that it is very reliable, unaffected by most weather conditions and work equally well day or night. The hardware is not expensive, and damaged components cheap to replace.
We think these systems can work very well in conjunction with the pedestrian detection cameras as the two technologies are a good compliment to each other.
